There's a way to get some of the early original Unix source code! Check out the PDP Unix Preservation Society site. The FAQ describes how to obtain a license for the source.

Unfortunately, the link to SCO's website no longer works. They must've taken that down around the time they started suing IBM and everyone else using Linux.... If I find a "source for the source", I'll post it here.
