More TrueNAS

Installing TrueNAS on a TerraMaster F8 SSD Plus is possible, as per a couple of forum posts (1, 2).

Hints on configuring an SMB share, albeit as per FreeNAS.

Initially I'd configured the NAS as RAIDZ1.  Then I read about the problems with RAIDZ1, and decided to reconfigure: added a mirror for the boot pool, and bought another flash drive so that two drives are in a vdev, to be mirrored.  Same capacity, but better redundancy.

TrueNAS

TrueNAS seems to do a lot of what I'm looking for in a NAS appliance.  Core is the FreeBSD-based version, which would have better networking.  However, Scale has better software support since it's Linux-based.

Installation of TrueNAS isn't too bad.  It's the setup that's a challenge!  Mainly, getting Windows to recognize the SMB setup has been an exercise in frustration.

Otherwise, one issue is the dead space on the "boot pool" (forum post)--while the pool can be expanded, not sure what to use it for.  Containers, perhaps?

The other thing is, perhaps for reliability I should mirror two 1TB drives (flash...) and have a partition on those drives as a separate vdev (forum post).  It's a bit overwhelming to understand how to set up a good configuration.

Also, Youtuber "Raid Owl" has some videos on setting up NAS appliances.

Nothing Phones

Pradhan mentioned that once his iPhone SE bought it, he couldn't get a replacement with the fingerprint sensor.  As such, he bought a Nothing phone.  Looks interesting, but I don't want Android....

Atomic Filament

Not quite the same as Atomic Tactical....  One of the hard enclosure manufacturers I was looking at had a link to a U.S.-made filament company, Atomic Filament.  Of course it's 60% more expensive than Chinese filament.

Aluminum Extrusions

In poking around at 3D printers, I've become more interested in the utility of extruded aluminum for building stuff.  Some two decades ago, I'd rescued some from the scrap tub at work, and although I never used it for anything, it was sure fascinating for some reason.

There's a site 80/20 that sells components.  Their catalog is massive!

Maker Pipe

Turns out there's an outfit making fittings for EMT conduit for limited structural applications: Maker Pipe.  I found it while searching for the stereolithography model for the Maker Faire robot, which I'd searched for as "makerfaire pip model"....

Odyssey Parts

AAA has a car repair estimator that I'd think would be useful.  Except around town, those prices are lower than the estimates one will actually get!

Autozone has a Duralast sway bar for $43/ea, and KYB rear shocks for $83/ea.

A place called Bernardi Parts has the OEM Honda parts (Odyssey).  The sway bars for $31/ea (although the flange nuts are probably needed too), and the OEM rear shock assembly is $169/ea.

Unpublished

Blogger is showing me this error on the blog home page:

Now this is hardly surprising considering I have a lot of firearm-related info on here, but it still sucks that they don't tell me which one!  I have maybe 50 in drafts, which I presume were unpublished.  Perhaps I should just be happy they don't delete the posts out of hand.

Letter Archival

One of the things that's out of hand in my papers is letters and such from others.  I don't get as many as I used to, nor do I write as many, but I would like to have a way to organize the material.

There are a couple sites that turned up regarding saving documents.  One is from Gaylord Archival, which sells archival products: Preserving Handwritten Letters.  The other is from the Smithsonian: Preserving Your Letters and Documents.

Long Time No Lync

I've been so busy that I haven't had time to link dump, even, so my tabs keep accruing.  To the tune of over 450 open in Safari on my iPhone.  Wut.  That must say something about my lack of organizational ability!  Still working on that part.

シースコッファー

Or so it’s called in Japanese airsoft circles, although apparently it’s really called “Spezialkoffer”.  Some dork on Facebook imported one to try to stuff a real MP5K into it, but apparently it needs a shell deflector.  $600 for a replica?  Ouch.  Just searching for 「シースコッファー」 will turn up a bunch of hits.

Ham BBS

 Another mini link dump...from RJS:

I was looking into Packet Radio BBS at one point, but never found the time to set things up. BPQ seems to be the common platform:
Robust Packet also has some BBS functionality, but looks like it is mostly used for other types of data transfer:
Rob Richter ran the largest BBS in the area back in the '90s -- North Castle BBS. He has since been involved with amateur radio and emergency communications: https://web.archive.org/...//www.ncastle.com/album.html

Analog

Well, being that I mostly work with the digital side of things and my professional exposure to analog electronics is minimal, I thought that I could fulfill that part of my experience via delving deeper into amateur radio.

Part of the problem with longer-distance radio communications is the need for lower frequencies (at least below VHF), which requires more expensive equipment and antennas.  Some people build their own antennas, but for the HF noob, perhaps pre-built ones are more accessible.  Buckmaster has an off-center-fed dipole antenna that covers seven bands, which may be where I should start.

One thing about ham radio is being able to find active frequencies.  To that end, I've poked at using Airspy with an RTL-SDR to find conversations to eavesdrop on.  Ultimately I'd like to get a portable, self-contained setup on a Raspberry Pi with a display to run all the time, or at least on a timer.  On that note, RPi projects for ham radio, I found a project site that has some useful information.

Lastly, while looking for SDRs, I found Analog Devices' learning toolkit for SDR, ADALM-PLUTO.  More interestingly, they have a 25 MHz oscilloscope device called the ADALM2000 that plugs into a USB port, for only $200, along with an analog electronics learning package.  That would sure be fun to poke at.

Antennas

In keeping with a resurgence in ham radio concerns....

Who knows if I'll ever get 'em, but hey.

Bonding/Grounding CSST

Structure Tech (home inspectors up in the 'Cities) post interesting info on Facebook, but they also have interesting articles.  The inspector for my place mentioned something about CSST bonding, which I need to review again.  In any case, ST posted a howto on bonding CSST.

Dinner

Yesterday’s dinner was chicken carbonara (the recipe was for tuna, but I had canned chicken) and roasted broccoli with ginger.  The recipes were good, but the execution lacking 😂
